Backcountry Tactics provides mobile training opportunities for tactical teams, law enforcement and correctional units that are tasked with apprehending dangerous fugitives in open air, wooded and rural environments. Our Man Tracking Operations course was specifically designed to assist teams in the development of this operational capability. Courses are delivered in your area at your facilities.

This 5-day course is presented using focused lectures, extensive field & range exercises, force-on-force scenarios with role players, a table-top exercise and a final functional exercise. The overall course objective is to prepare officers to respond and participate in man tracking operations.

Backcountry Tactics courses are taught by Charlie Winslow. Charlie began his law enforcement career as a Virginia Game Warden in 1981. He accepted a position with the Chesapeake Virginia Police Department in 1983 and retired from that department as a captain in 2010.
Charlie was assigned to the Chesapeake Police Department SWAT Team in 1984 and continued in that assignment for 26 years until retiring in 2010. He held positions of operator, sniper, team leader, executive officer and retired as the commander of that team.
From 2010 until the present Charlie has been the Tactical Training Coordinator and lead instructor for Crater Tactical Training, a division of Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy in Disputanta, Virginia.
In 2010 Charlie received the NTOA John Kolman Award of Excellence.
Charlie has been involved in multiple man tracking operations as a game warden, patrol officer, SWAT operator and SWAT commander. He has been teaching tactical woodland operations and man tracking professionally for 15 years. He created the Man Tracking Operations course to assist tactical teams in developing this mission capability.
